Film Production Incentive
As well as large productions, Croatia is also attracting smaller crews and independent filmmakers to use the country as a set. Since 2012, there is a Film Production Incentive, this initiative is available for international and local producers, it offers a 25% rebate on the expenses with an extra of 5% rebate if the filming takes place in an underdeveloped area.
The requirements for incentive application are: ‘The applicant must be a Croatian producer, co-producer or production service provider that has produced or provided production services for at least one publicly shown audiovisual work within the last three years.”
The Master Butcher’s Singing Club
The first movie taking place in the country using the Film Production Incentive is, The Master Butcher’s Singing Club, which is originally a novel from 2003.
It revolves around the german american cultural tradition, the novel tells the life of a german sniper, towards the end of World War I, that after defeated, returns to his homeland. He then migrates to America, after marrying his best friend pregnant fiancee, in honour of his promise to his friend on the battlefield.
What is more impressive about this production is that, an entire american town was built in Odransko Polje in Zagreb, in order to recreate the scenery of the migration of a german defeated soldier to America.
The fact that Croatia is exposed more and more through films and media, doesn’t only mean that it will be seen more through the screens worldwide.
This exposure increases the interest from people willing to visit the country, therefore increasing the number of tourists willing to visit Croatia.
