Different types of double layered windows appeared centuries ago<\/strong>, two sheets of glass on a window or a hanging layer of glass installed only during the winter on the outside of the house, but the insulating double glazed windows that we know nowadays started to be spread around 50 years ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The idea of different layers is to trap gas in the in between the glass sheets.<\/strong> The glass itself used on those windows are thick average thickness of 6.5 mm with the possibility of going over 10mm, The glass panels in double-glazed windows propagate heat from both sides, with only one layer of thermal gas absorving the temperature difference, making it still possible for condensation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Common energy star windows only have an R-3 value, triple glazed modern windows have R-5:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNow as building codes adopt the Department of Energy’s push toward R-5 windows<\/strong>, or hurricane-resistant windows. Triple glazed windows<\/a> are beyond ASHRAE 189.1 and IGCC standards, although they are now required after the adoption of the 2012 IECC standard.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is IECC standard?<\/h3>\n

“The IECC<\/a> sets minimum energy efficiency provisions for both residential and commercial buildings. Users of the code can choose between two methods for showing compliance, the prescriptive and performance paths.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The prescriptive path of the code sets specific minimum performance levels for each of the components of the building envelope, such as ceiling and wall insulation, window U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), and air infiltration.<\/strong> For each component, these prescriptive requirements must be met or exceeded, without the ability to tradeoff between components. While it allows less flexibility, this path can be more straightforward to comply with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Resistant to condensation they also reduce sound propagation.<\/strong> The two layer of gas trapped between the three sheets of thermal insulation glass handle better temperature differences of the inside and outside. It guarantees you no condensation problems inside your house.<\/strong><\/p>\n
